During the Norfolk Flora Group outing to Thetford, we tried to find some different habitats within our mainly urban tetrad. We were pleased to find an arable field and there, growing along the edge were a few very neat looking dome-shaped plants about a foot high. The plant was obviously a labiate (dead-nettle) and the minty smell narrowed down the possibilities.However the plant was unfamiliar to us so we took a sample and photo to help us identify it. We tried to track it down in Poland and the closest possibility was Cat-mint. We are now waiting for the plant to flower so we can make a definitive identification.

Finally two months later, the plant flowered to reveal tiny white flowers (dotted with purple spots) in crowded whorls, so we were able to confirm Cat-mint Nepeta cataria.
