A discovery to dye for

On a sunny day in mid-June I was delighted to come across a small patch of Dyer's Greenweed  Genista tinctoria, on the top of a ditchbank beside a quiet track near Wacton in South Norfolk. The only downside was that, in order to take a photo, I had to perch precariously beside a deep and very steep-sided ditch right next to an ants' nest. Fortunately I hadn't damaged the nest and the ants seemed to be quite friendly. Dyer's Greenweed is now very scarce in Norfolk and appears to be confined to the claylands in south-east of the county.
